GOVERNMENT AND SPIRITUALITY
BYU Professor, Dr. Kelly Ogden has said, "The Book of Mosiah, Chapter 29, tells us: It is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right. Governments are only good when the people are good. As founding father John Adams observed, 'Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. Liberty demands responsibility. Democracy can function optimally only on a foundation of decency among the citizens…'
On the most critical issues the nations of the world are facing (abortion, pornography, substance abuse, same gender marriage and so on), the proportion of the populace standing for righteous principles is often just barely over the fifty percent mark. The best armor the Latter-day Saints can use to counter the downward spiral of society is the Gospel of Jesus Christ." (The Book of Mormon, verse by verse, page 380)
Dr. Andrew Skinner wrote, "The one time spiritual experience will not sustain you. You must be continually experiencing God's Spirit and love. (Constant nourishment of body and Spirit). If you do not feel the Spirit regularly, the commandments become burdens, not blessings and you may burn out and quit.
Spirituality is an ongoing process. It is the struggle for daily diligence, doing the little things by which Christ can bring about great things in your life. The little things are actually not so little; daily sincere prayer, daily serious scripture study, regular worship in the temple and regular service to others become a big part of your mortal life and make you a sure candidate for eternal life. Christlike love must be continuous and contemporary." (The Book of Mormon verse by verse, pg. 392)
