A Man's Church

The Right Questions

A friend told me the following:  A stake president he knew was prone to ask questions in the temple recommend interview that were beyond what the Church has required that we ask.  For instance, “Do you watch R rated movies?  Do you consume cola drinks with caffeine? Were you honest in the income tax return you filed last year? And so forth.

A member of that stake complained to the general church offices and a member of the Quorum of the Seventy was sent to investigate the complaint.  Rather than interviewing all the members of the stake presidency, the member of the Seventy called a special meeting for all the leadership in the stake.  The Seventy then read the temple recommend questions to the group, as they are written in the handbook and then said, “These are the questions that the Lord wants asked during a temple recommend interview, because this is the Lord’s Church.  Any questions that are more or less than these are not the questions of the Lord’s Church but instead the questions of a man’s church.

Nothing more was said and the Seventy returned to Salt Lake.  There was no more problem with the questions that were not in line with this instruction.
